Elliott returns to haunt Wolves

Preston come from behind to stun leaders at Molineux

Championship leaders Wolves suffered a first home defeat in over three months after Preston North End striker Stephen Elliott scored twice in a 3-1 win against his former club. Elliott had drawn Preston level on 24 minutes, just four minutes after Sylvan Ebanks-Blake capitalised on an Andy Lonergan error to put Wolves in front. Sean St Ledger gave Preston the lead before half-time and Elliott, who left Wolves last September, made certain of the points just past the hour mark. Wolves started the brighter of the two sides and imposed their game on the visitors from the off. Michael Kightly had the first real opportunity after 18 minutes following some neat interchange inside the area, but his tame shot was easily saved by Lonergan. But Wolves took the lead out of nowhere two minutes later. Lonergan's attempted clearance from inside the area fell straight to Ebanks-Blake and the striker slotted calmly past the goalkeeper. Kightly blasted over minutes later before Carl Ikeme was called into action to tip Elliott's effort over the bar at the other end.

Not to be denied

But Elliott was not to be denied against his former employers and he stabbed home Ross Wallace's cross at the near post to bring Preston level after 24 minutes. The Irishman was enjoying his first return to Molineux and he came within a whisker of a second goal for the visitors as his shot flew over Ikeme's crossbar. With four minutes of the half remaining, Preston's Youl Mawene diverted the ball goalwards and Jon Parkin headed onto the crossbar. Wolves could not clear and St Ledger was the first to react, prodding the ball in from close range. Parkin had the ball in the back of the net for Preston following a goalmouth scramble just minutes after the restart, but the referee's assistant ruled out the strike for offside as St Ledger lay on the ground after an aerial challenge on Ikeme. Parkin should have added a third for the visitors in the 55th minute but wasted a great chance as the home defence took too long to clear. But Elliott did extend Preston's lead just after the hour mark following further good work from the impressive Wallace down the flank. The on-loan Sunderland winger got the better of Richard Stearman and Ikeme fumbled his cross straight to Chris Sedgwick, who saw his shot blocked and the ball fell to Elliott who made no mistake from 18 yards. Chris Iwelumo cannoned a header against the bar as Wolves chased the game, before referee Colin Webster controversially reversed his decision to award the home side a penalty following Parkin's alleged handball - an incident that saw North End manager Alan Irvine sent to the stands for his initial protests.
