He sat down with boss Jackie McNamara and decided his future lies elsewhere, having not featured since November.
Swan told Press Association Sport: "I had a meeting with the manager earlier on this week and we decided it would be best if we parted ways.
"I've found it really difficult having to watch on while the team struggled so badly week after week.
"I'm feeling really fit now and I'm looking forward to pre-season already, hopefully with the right club who play the right way."
McNamara, who presided over relegation to the National League, had spoken of Swan as a potential leader in his side, but the defender paid the price for his part in York's 6-0 loss at Portsmouth and 5-1 reverse to Accrington, which came with five days of each other.
The Minstermen are likely to confirm their full retained list by the end of the week.
