Matavz and Toivonen goals secure away win in Turkey

Two quick goals ensured PSV Eindhoven claimed an away win to give them control of their Europa League last-32 tie with Trabzonspor. Tim Matavz and Ola Toivonen stunned the home side with strikes inside the first 12 minutes. Trabzonspor pulled a goal back through Olcan Adin on the half-hour and, while they controlled possession for long periods, their horror start proved costly as they failed to find a leveller.

Noise

PSV were greeted by a wall of noise from the home fans but the visitors soon sucked the life out of the intimidating atmosphere with their early brace. PSV goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson did have to negotiate a tricky moment in the second minute when he just kept out a swerving drive from Burak Yilmaz. But PSV were soon ahead thanks to a stunning strike from Matavz after six minutes as he turned on the edge of the area before arrowing a shot into the top-left corner. The Trabzonspor fans were then left stunned when PSV went 2-0 ahead with just 12 minutes on the clock. Toivonen nipped in front of his marker to meet Dries Mertens' pass before neatly finishing into the far corner. It could have been even better for PSV as the dangerous Mertens forced a couple of hacked clearances from his corners while goalkeeper Tolga Zengin made a sharp save to deny Toivonen. There was further bad news for Trabzonspor when Serkan Balci was booked to rule him out of the second leg. The hosts were in desperate need of inspiration and Adin provided it with a fine solo goal after 33 minutes. The midfielder burst past a defender before prodding past an onrushing Isaksson to score.
Counter
It helped to turn the game around, with PSV now content to sit deep, but Trabzonspor's hopes of a leveller were undermined by their anxiousness to get the ball forward. The hosts could have conceded a third when Jeremain Lens scooped over, while at the other end Yilmaz thrashed wildly over. As the game drew on Trabzonspor's heads started to drop and they were lucky not to suffer a bigger defeat as substitute Georgino Wijnaldum, Lens and Toivonen all failed to hit the target late on. Lens almost set up Kevin Strootman in injury time but he just failed to get a touch to the winger's ball across the area.
