Owls too strong for Hornets

Sheff Wed defeated Watford 2-0 to record their first league win since the opening day of the season.

Tudgay and Spurr on target for Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday defeated Watford 2-0 to record their first league win since the opening day of the season and rocket into the top six. Marcus Tudgay opened the scoring for the Owls after 22 minutes and Tommy Spurr added a second after the break to secure a comfortable victory. Tudgay seized on a defensive mix-up to break the deadlock, while Spurr's goal was a fine individual effort. Wednesday started with only one recognised striker in Tudgay and employed winger Jermaine Johnson in a more central role alongside him. Both sides opted for long balls forward in a lacklustre opening, while John Eustace was first to threaten for the visitors with a volley from 20 yards. But Wednesday took the lead with a scrappy goal. Watford failed to clear on-loan Middlesbrough defender Tony McMahon's long throw into the penalty area and Tudgay stabbed the ball home at the second attempt via a deflection from close range. Watford defender Jon Harley denied the Owls a second soon after when he blocked James O'Connor's volley. Leigh Bromby was booked for his foul on in-form Owls winger Etienne Esajas as Watford struggled to make an impression. The defender then spurned a rare chance for the Hornets, failing to connect with Lee Williamson's corner when unopposed six yards out.

Superb

Watford restarted the second half with more purpose and home goalkeeper Lee Grant was forced into a fine one-handed save to keep out Williamson's 20-yard shot. But Owls defender Spurr then had most in the home crowd of 17,066 on their feet with a superbly-worked second goal. The full-back collected Peter Gilbert's throw-in and marauded down the left, played a one-two with Esajas and finished in style with a low right-footed shot into the bottom corner from just inside the area. Esajas and Jobi McAnuff traded shots and Eustace tried his luck from distance, while Tommy Smith headed wide for the visitors from Williamson's cross. But the Owls' two-goal advantage was rarely threatened. Late substitute Wade Small, making his first appearance of the season, lashed a 20-yard shot wide and Tudgay was off target with another long-range effort. Tamas Priskin's left-footed drive was also wayward as Watford went down to their second league defeat of the season.
