PSV knocked out again while Ajax progress

PSV Eindhoven crashed out of the Dutch Cup after suffering a 3-0 defeat at the hands of rivals Feyenoord at Phillips Stadion. For all their success in the league in recent times, PSV have won the KNVB Beker, Holland's premier cup competition, just once in the past 14 seasons. And their below-par record continued on Wednesday as they were comfortably swept aside by their quarter-final opponents. The Rotterdammers went ahead through Karim El Ahmadi after 20 minutes before veteran Giovanni van Bronckhorst made it two nine minutes before the break. PSV failed to respond after the interval and Feyenoord deservedly wrapped up victory thanks to El Ahmadi's second of the night three minutes from time. PSV's arch-rivals Ajax did progress to the semi-finals, although they needed extra-time to see off the spirited challenge of nine-man NEC Nijmegen. Demy de Zeeuw opened the scoring for Ajax after 43 minutes, and when Jeroen Heubach saw red for the visitors for a second yellow card, the writing appeared to be on the wall. But NEC dug deep and forced the extra period when Bjorn Vleminckx levelled after 81 minutes. Rens van Eijden then scored three minutes into the first period of extra-time to set NEC on course for an unlikely win, but Toby Alderweireld pulled the Amsterdammers level after 111 minutes. NEC's task became near-impossible when they lost another man three minutes later as Jeffrey Sarpong picked up a second booking, and Ajax finally wrapped up the victory 60 second later as Siem de Jong fired home. Eerste Divisie promotion hopefuls Go Ahead Eagles provided the shock of the quarter-finals as they dispatched NAC Breda 2-1. The visitors from the second tier had substitute Donny de Groot to thank for their surprise win, his strikes after 65 and 76 minutes enough to see off the challenge of their Eredivisie opponents, who replied through Donny Gorter's 72nd-minute penalty. FC Twente booked their place in the semi-finals with a thumping 4-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam. Kenneth Perez scored a brace to set the visitors on their way to victory, while further goals from Blaise Nkufo and Bryan Ruiz inside the final 10 minutes maintained Twente's push for a domestic double.
