Late Bailey equaliser after Counago misses penalty

Charlton made Ipswich pay for missing a penalty when coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Portman Road. Owen Garvan put the hosts ahead with a free-kick in the 37th minute, but Nicky Weaver then saved substitute Pablo Counago's penalty in the 69th minute after a Kelly Youga handball. Midfielder Nick Bailey scored the equaliser for the Addicks on 82 minutes to earn a share of the spoils. Ipswich boss Jim Magilton made one enforced change from Saturday's 3-1 win at Plymouth, with Jonathan Stead replacing the suspended David Norris. For Charlton, Alan Pardew brought in Youga, Matt Holland, Svetoslav Todorov and Lloyd Sam following his side's 1-1 weekend draw with Burnley. Ipswich had appeals for a penalty waved away in the seventh minute when Stead went over under a challenge from visitors' skipper Mark Hudson.

Dragged shot

Former Charlton striker Kevin Lisbie dragged a shot wide in the next Blues attack after being played in by a slide rule Veliche Shumulikoski pass. The home side were dominating the attempts on goal in the early stages and saw a hooked 20-yard Stead shot fly narrowly over Weaver's bar in the 17th minute. Recalled winger Sam had the visitors' only first-half effort on goal in the 27th minute but his tame shot was easily saved by Richard Wright. But it was Garvan, fresh from his brace against Plymouth, who broke the deadlock when his curling effort flew into the net. The 20-year-old then stung Weaver's fingers with the first shot of the second half from 25 yards. Weaver was called into action again shortly afterwards to palm away an effort from Garvan's central midfield partner Shumulikoski. Lisbie had a great chance to extend Ipswich's lead but curled wide after cutting in from the left wing.
Gifted penalty
The home side were gifted a penalty in the 69th minute when left-back Youga slapped the ball in a tussle with Town winger Jonathan Walters. But Counago, who replaced Stead in the 63rd minute, saw his spot-kick pushed away by Weaver diving to his left. The home side continued to create openings, with Lisbie firing just wide and Counago scuffing an attempted chip when one-on-one with Weaver. But they were hit by the sucker punch in the 82nd minute when Bailey hooked in substitute Hameur Bouazza's right-wing cross. The goal invigorated Charlton and both sides had chances to win it late on. Town substitute Danny Haynes fired over from the edge of the box and it needed a last-ditch challenge from Ipswich skipper Gareth McAuley to deny Darren Ambrose a last-minute winner against his old club. But neither side could clinch victory in the five minutes of added time.
