Garmash leaves it late as Kiev see off Besiktas

Dynamo Kiev struck late on to pick up a narrow 1-0 win over Besiktas and move into second spot in Europa League Group E. Denys Garmash scored the only goal of the game deep into stoppage-time to hand the Ukrainian outfit all three points. He converted Oleg Guzev's cross four minutes into injury-time to prevent a keenly-contested tie from ending goalless. Dynamo showed the greater attacking intent throughout the game, but neither side created many clear-cut opportunities and the result was harsh on the Turkish visitors, who drop to third in the group. The match started at a fast pace. Andriy Yarmolenko's right-footed shot from the centre of the area was punched clear by Cenk Gonen, while team-mate Brown Ideye sent in a left-footed effort from 20 yards.

    Blocked

Besiktas' Tomas Sivok had a left-footed effort from the left wing which was caught by Olexandr Shovkovskiy and Simao Sabrosa had a shot blocked before the Kiev goalkeeper saved with his legs from the same player. Yarmolenko came closest to breaking the deadlock midway through the first half when his 20-yard shot hit the post. Artem Milevskiy and Andriy Shevchenko also unleashed efforts and Gusev shot over the bar, while Eduardo De Oliveira was denied by the Kiev goalkeeper as both sides continued to probe. Gusev again sent an effort high but neither side could find the breakthrough as the first half ended all square. The Ukrainians started the second half on the attack, Garmash shooting over before putting a header over the bar.
    Intervened
Roberto Hilbert was high for the Turkish side as neither team fashioned clear-cut openings. Shevchenko's shot was gathered by the goalkeeper before Oleksandr Aliev shot over as the hosts began to turn the screw. Yarmolenko almost got a late winner, Gonen punching away his right-footed effort and Aliev shot over in injury time. The game seemed set to finish goalless before Garmash intervened to bring the hosts a dramatic three points. It heaped more misery on Besiktas, who suffered an 8-1 aggregate defeat against their Ukrainian opponents in last season's competition.
