Super-sub strikes twice to sink Charlton

Super-sub Sam Vokes continued his goalscoring heroics as his late brace defeated Charlton and kept Wolves top of the Championship. The talented teenager, who bagged a last-gasp winner for Wales in the World Cup qualifying win over Azerbaijan, produced two smart finishes in six minutes at The Valley. Nicky Bailey's stunning volley put the Addicks in front, but he then felled Andy Keogh after the break and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake levelled from the penalty spot. Wolves had already been dealt a blow before kick-off when Chris Iwelumo - who was last season's top scorer for Charlton - was injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced by Keogh. And their afternoon got worse when Bailey, a £400,000 summer signing from Southend, hit his first goal for the Addicks. Wolves only half cleared Jonathan Fortune's free-kick and when the ball eventually fell to Bailey some 25 yards out, the midfielder cracked a sweet volley back past Wayne Hennessey and into the net.

Reeling

The visitors were reeling after the goal and Bailey and Luke Varney wasted decent chances to double Charlton's lead when they fired wide. Ebanks-Blake, who scored twice as Wolves won a dramatic corresponding fixture 3-2 last season, could have dragged them level midway through the first half but he curled his effort wide. Michael Kightly then sent a weak header the wrong side of the post, before Keogh followed up David Jones' 25-yard effort only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Moments after the break Varney should have put the hosts two up but skewed his shot wide, before Hameur Bouazza sent another drive past the post. And Charlton were made to pay on the hour when Bailey felled Keogh in the area and Ebanks-Blake stepped up to ram the resulting penalty past Nicky Weaver. Vokes, on as a 65th-minute substitute, put Wolves into the lead with 10 minutes remaining when he tucked away Stephen Ward's left-wing cross. And as Charlton chased an equaliser, the former Bournemouth striker was on hand to prod his second past Weaver to secure the points and keep Wolves top of the pile.
